 "A Zune Review" 2009-10-07
By John C. (GA)
As someone who has had numerous PMPs through the years, I can honestly say that this new Zune HD is the nicest one of them all, albeit with a few quirks.

First, the OLED 480x272 screen is everything you have heard about and more. The colors are vivid, rich, and very realistic. It is a great screen in all aspects except for viewing in direct sunlight (I have yet to see any screen perform well under such circumstances). The refresh rate seems to be quite good.

The design of the Zune itself is very nice -- a metal back with 4 screws add a kind of industrial design. It weights less than you expect it to, however. The first time you pick it up is very surprising. The power button is on top, another button about 2/3s of the way up on the left side, and then the button on the face of the device below the screen. The headphones jack and the connector are on the bottom. It looks great!

The software has some quirks and it isn't the most intuitive to use, especially for the first time; however, neither was Itunes. I expect with some time it will be quite easy to navigate. Getting through the menus on the device take a little getting used to...but after about 10 minutes, you'll be a pro. It is very fast and responsive.

The response of the software in doing things (ie: accessing songs, submenus, changing the orientation, etc.) leaves all of the Ipods in the dust. It is much more responsive.

Sound quality is quite good -- noticeably better than my Ipod Touch when outputting by headphones and by dock to an A/V setup.

Now, for some downsides.

The included headphones are fairly terrible. Do yourself a favor and get a nicer set.

There is absolutely no documentation included and you have to login to download the Zune software before you attach it to your computer.

There is no speaker on the Zune, itself. Kind of silly but I got used to having one.

Zune Pass is great. $15/month, keep 10 songs forever (non-DRMed) and download as much as you want. It is honestly the BEST value out there without a doubt.

In short, it is a great device. As long as MS continues great support and continues adding functionality, apps, etc. it is an Ipod killer.

"This is for those who are deciding to get the Zune HD, or an iTouch..." 2009-10-07
By A. Bostick (Austin Networks)
This will sound wierd but I don't own a Zune HD...yet

But I hope that I can help those that are deciding wether to get an Hd or an iTouch, so I'll put in some of my own ideas and thoughts.

As some of you know, Apple almost filed bankruptcy in '97, and were thinking about selling themselves to Sega. But instead, they took the pain of the mad Apple Supporters, and let Microsoft buy 150 million dollars worth of their market or whatever. So think, they depended on MS, their competitor, to stay in business.

Sothat meant that there was one thing that Aple addmitted:

1. That Microsoft was better, they wouldn't say it out loud, otherwise they would go deeper than rock bottom. They depended on a company that was their comptetitor, the one that was successful, and with all the money. Microsoft.

So apparently, by popular demand, MS was better overall.

I know, that was 12 years ago, things can change, I mean, Look at Apple now, they made the largest comeback in U.S history. So here's my point:

Businesses Grow. Microsoft was concentrating more on other things, such as their Operating systems, programming, Windows Mobile, and other things, just not Media entertainment, until the 4-5 years ago that they made the first Zune 30gb.

Most of Apple's Revenue comes from iPods, more than their Macs, and such, so apparently, Apple has been concentrating on Media Entertainment. Are you following up on what I'm saying?

The Zune HD can grow, Microsoft just got down and dirty when they released the HD, they have to now deal with Internet access, Apps, the new programs they put in the HD's OS, New things they aren't completely all-knowing about when they put that stuff into their First ever touch screen Media Player.

So give the Hd some time, it WILL grow. It will have Apps, It will be better than the iTouch.

You will hear some people say that the Zune HD doesn't have any actual High Definition programmed into it, NOT TRUE.

The iPhone 3G has 1020p and is supposed to be High Def.

The Zune HD has 720p, I have seen a video myself of someone comparing those two products, And the Zune HD still came out on top with the High-Def.

Why? I don't know why, when I saw te video, the Zune HD had more color, it was eye-popping amazing Color. I wouldn't lie to you.

Anyway, give it some time to grow, I'm not saying not to buy it now, by all means, if your looking for a good player, but it. But you WILL see growth in the Zune HD.

 "SOFTWARE PROBLEMS!!!" 2009-10-07
By D. Kester
Forget buying a Zune if you use a web based email. Microsoft has changed their terms of agreement and will no longer let you use a web based email. I've been a Zune owner for two years and used Hotmail for 8 and now I've got a useless electronic brick since I use Hotmail. Nevermind that Microsoft owns Hotmail and Zune, they clearly don't have an idea of what they're doing. I'll never buy a Zune product again!!!

 "Frustrating and Wonderful" 2009-10-05
By J. Morton (San Francisco, CA USA)
THe Zune HD is a beautiful little device with a gorgeous screen and absolutely the coolest *looking* interface on the planet. I would give it five stars if not for some really major drawbacks. On the plus side, the HD radio is vastly superior to any alternative out there. If you are looking for a device that you plan to use largely as a radio, this may be the device for you. The Wow Factor is pretty high. People do find it beautiful. It is small, but not too small, and the OLED screen is dazzling (although my iPhone was easier to read in bright sunlight). As a music player is works just fine. The interface for loading music is a little messy, but not to the point of aggravation. The Zune Pass is a great way to add music at a reasonable price (essentially the same as Rhapsody To Go).

Now for the minus side. As I'm sure you've already discovered, the App store is spectacularly pathetic. There is no evidence at this time that they are going to make it easy for developers to improve this, so, for now, the Zune HD is a severely hobbled device when compared to the iPod Touch. The addition of a few Internet radio apps, such as Pandora, Slacker, and LastFM, would double the value of this device alone. The software that you install on your computer to communicate with this device is beautiful to look at, but has some serious problems. If you have a Mac, just forget about this device altogether. There is no Mac support (big surprise there). If you have a PC, prepare for the Zune software to eat up every available bit of space when it is running. This thing is major resource hog. If you are trying to run it while working, expect twenty second delays every time you switch between programs. When it is running, the Zune display of information on the computer is really pretty, but what a high price to pay for this.

All in all, I like the Zune HD a lot. If you don't currently have a Touch or an iPhone, you listen to radio a lot, and you own a PC, this is an excellent choice. If you are a Mac user, this is a definite DO NOT buy. What it does, it does well. If Microsoft can improve the application offerings, this may be a real challenge to the iPod supremacy, but I'm not holding my breath.
