How it Works
You'll notice how smoothly and easily VoiceOver works. A lot of thought went into creating an iPod nano that not only talks, but says the right things. It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod nano. First, iTunes reads your song information, then uses the VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists, and playlists. Just sync your iPod nano to your computer and it really speaks to you.
It Speaks Multiple Languages
Your music library has songs from all over the world--a love song from France, a bolero from Spain, a pop tune from Japan. Luckily, VoiceOver speaks fluent song.
iTunes selects the language and best voice for your song titles and artist names. It looks at song data, like the title, artist, and album information, then applies intelligent algorithms to choose the right language. For example, iTunes recognizes the song "Ya Viene el Sol� by Ozomatli as a Spanish song, so your iPod nano will automatically speak that song title and artist in Spanish. "Amazing Device - More Features Than I Need" 2009-10-05

I previously owned a Nano 3rd Gen, and liked it well enough. My only major complaints were Itunes (buggy and annoying interface) and the 8 GB limit. I have quite a large music library and was constantly juggling it trying to fit everything I wanted to carry around. Otherwise, I liked the Touch 3rd Gen, and liked the compact form factor. I liked the video ability too, which I found astonishigly useful. Alas, somehow it was lost/stolen.
Ipods are enough of a luxury for me that I didn't replace it immediately. The 4th Gen Nano was an improvement (except for the forrm factor -- I'm one of the few who liked the more compact form of the 3rd gen). The 5th gen Nano finally sucked me in with amazing new features and teriffic design. Below are the things I really liked and which caused me to shell out for the latest version:
1. Better screen. Sure the screen is tiny, but I can see it very clearly with my glasses off, I'm nearsighted, but have good closeup vision.
2. FM radio - This is something available in other mp3 players, but finally Apple has decided to join the world on this feature. It works pretty well. As noted, the radio uses the earbuds cord as an antenna. While that is a problem for some, it is actually a plus for me, as my office is in the center of a large building and FM reception is iffy. I can position the cord in such a way that I get better reception than my table radio. YMMV.
3. Video - It's amazingly decent for such a tiny device. I don't need video -- at least at present, but adding features like this inspires new uses that no one ever predicted.
4. 16 GB. I can fit more stuff in it now (yes, this was available in the 4th gen, but it is a big plus for me -- I did not want to buy another 8 GB ipod.) Additionally, I really don't care about the unavailability of still pictures. I have a Blackberry that takes fairly good pictures already, and I can send them via email immediately -- much more useful than if I relied on the Nano.
5. External Speaker - very useful, enough said.
6. Voice recording -- I understand that you can add a decent directional mike, but haven't explored this yet. If it works, it's a real plus, digital recorders are expensive and carrying them is a PITA.
Things I don't much care for --
1. Itunes continues to be basically proprietary, although I actually like the good integration with the Apple Store. I always have the feeling that Itunes is doing something with my music and data that is for Apple's benefit, not mine (the Genius feature is interesting, but I'm certain that Apple is doing something profitable with the "non-identifiable" data it collects). I know there's no more privacy on the net, but that doesn't mean I like the trend. If I'm going to be part of someone's business model, I'd like to be able to opt out or receive some share of the dough from the data harvesting. This is not an Apple-specific complaint -- they all do it. In addition, when Itunes works, it's fine, but when you have a problem with it, you better be have a black belt in Google searches for the answer. The Apple support site requires much more time and trouble than it should.
2. I have damaged hearing in one ear. The quick fix would be for me to adjust the right left balance in the equalizer, but Apple has never put such an adjustment in, and the Apple store personnel were suprised by this. I sent in a suggestion to Apple. No response. This is an issue I do not understand. Why hasn't Apple fixed this 5 years ago?
"Another Winner" 2009-10-05

This 5th Generation entry, the iPod Nano, is a noble successor into the popular MP3 field.
Small, light and packed with new features, it is about to raise the bar when setting standards.
What started out as a revoluntary tactic to change the way we listen to music has now come into its own when Apple loaded the Nano with a video camera, a radio and an app that will tell you the title and the artist of the song before it plays.
The screen is crisp and clear and, as with the others, the Nano is so light and compact that you can tuck it in any pocket or clip it to a belt.
I found it a bit strange thought that no charger was included. You can charge it with the supplied cord to an active computer but if you are travelling (or need a quick charge even though the battery life is remarkable), you have to purchase a separate charger.
With that small "quirk" there is nothing else one can say about the iPod Nano but, BRAVO!

Love the new features. While the video recorder won't replace your camcorder(not meant to, I'm sure) it takes surprisingly good video and I love all the options(sepia, cyborg, security cam etc). Sound is good and I love the addition of the radio, with Live Pause and the ability to tag songs. It goes without saying that it is extremely portable and it is durable.
I have had many Ipods and this one is a winner.
"Nice, if You Like iTunes" 2009-10-04

The iPod Nano 5g is a very well designed and built device. The video looks nice, the screen is large enough to reasonably see a good bit of text (particularly helpful when scrolling through long playlists, or a large number of playlists). The screen is sharp and well let, the plugs are well situated, and the form factor makes the device easy to carry and hold. I particularly like the flash memory here, which synchronizes much faster, and allows me to eject the device very quickly when I'm done synchronizing. The navigation is "standard iPod," which is a good thing.
The downside to this device is iTunes. Apple has, over time, tied their iPods more and more strongly to iTunes. It's to the point now that I'm seriously considering moving away from iPods and onto something else, because I don't like iTunes, and don't want it on my computer. iTunes is far too oriented to selling you entertainment--features related to podcasts, listening to books, or listening to other lectures and information are increasingly being buried under a shell of "BUY THIS HIP NEW MUSIC/SHOW FROM US!" nonsense. I know, I know, it's always hip and cool to buy new overproduced music from today's "labels," much like it's hip to drink overcooked coffee from big chain coffee shops, and watch movies with no plot from today's studios, but really, must we ALL be cool hip entertainment immersed cyborgs?
Untie this thing from iTunes, and it would be a really nice device.

I like my new ipod - sometimes.
And sometimes I want to trow it away.
pros:

cons:
video camera (how to take videos while holding it in your hands without filming them?)
not compatible to most of the car adapter kits (I tried 5 different types!!!!! FM-Transmitters and direct transmitters)
With the FM Transmitters you might get a station - but you cannot listen to the music. Well if you switch the sound volume to the highest level, you might hear some music. But in very poor quality.
With the direct transmitters you can hear the music in good quality. But you cannot switch to another song, album, interpret. The ipod is frozen.
I thought my ipod was damaged and i had it to check.
The technician there told me, that I am not the only one with that problems.
Because this ipod is that new, the accessory on the market is not compatible yet.
So I have to buy a comlete new car kit for this fifth generation ipod. (I need a device that holds my ipod, because my car is that little, that I don't have any place to put my ipod....)
